D3 Lax RoundUp

By Matt Noonan (@MattNoonan11)

The Bates men’s lacrosse team scored its 10th straight win of the season, as well as its seventh consecutive New England Small College Athletics Conference (NESCAC) victory this afternoon with a 15-12 win over Middlebury College.

Kyle Weber powered the Bobcats’ attack, netting five goals, while dishing out one assist on seven shots. Charlie Fay recorded recorded a hat trick and Mitchell Drake registered 14 stop.

Bates jumped out to a three-goal lead before extending its advantage to 11-4 at the break Middlebury countered in the third, netting seven consecutive goals to pull within one (12-11), but the Bobcats answered with three tallies in the final session to secure the win.

The Bobcats return to the field next on Tuesday, April 18 when they visit Tufts University for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.

The Jumbos extended its winning streak to 11 games by defeating Hamilton College, 18-6. Danny Murphy paced the Powder Blue and White with five goals and four assists, while Robert Treiber deflected six shots.

Tufts visits Amherst College next Saturday with face-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

MIT overcame a three-goal deficit at the break to defeat Babson College in Cambridge by a score of 13-10. Jack Kelly netted four goals for the Engineers, while Graham Davis finished with three goals and three assists.

The win bumps the Engineers to 2-0 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, while the Beavers fall to 0-2.

Ben Farrell netted five goals, including the game-clincher with 17 seconds remaining in the final stanza to lift Johnson & Wales past Emmanuel College, 11-10. Farrell netted a pair in the third and fourth stanzas, along with his initial strike in the second quarter, while Bradley Morris deflected 10 shots to improve to 8-2 between the pipes.

Johnson & Wales currently currently occupies the top spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), while Lasell College sits below them at 2-0 in league play. The Lasers defeated Albertus Magnus by a score of 21-7, while Mount Ida edged Dean College, 10-6.

Lasell and Johnson & Wales will meet against each other on Tuesday, April 11th in Newton, Massachusetts with face-off scheduled for 4 p.m.

10 Games To Watch

By NoontimeSports.com

Week two of the New England D3 Football season officially begins this evening with some intriguing match-ups, including SUNY Maritime versus Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Curry College at MIT.

Let’s kick-off a brand new week of games with our weekly 10 Games to Watch post, including predictions, too.

Curry College at MIT (Friday, September 8th at 7 p.m.): Both teams came out of week one victorious, but Curry may have the momentum heading into this one after a hard-fought home win over Fitchburg State. MIT’s Chad Martinovich described his team’s 28-0 win over Becker a week ago as a “family win.” The Engineers will need all three units (offense, defense and special teams) to assist them against the Colonels. PREDICTION: Curry 28, MIT 21

SUNY Maritime at Mass. Maritime Academy (Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m.): Richie Phillips had a monstrous game last year against the Privateers, rushing for three touchdowns and 100 yards on 15 carries. Will he do it again this evening? We’ll have to wait and find out! PREDICTION: Mass. Maritime 30, SUNY Maritime 28

Western New England at Westfield State (Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m.): Quarterback Anthony Service and the Golden Bears’ offense won’t be an easy unit for the Owls’ defense to slow down, so look for WNE to score a bounce-back win against Westfield State this evening. PREDICTION: WNE 28, Westfield State 10

Endicott College at Bridgewater State (Saturday, September 9 at 12 p.m.): This is an intriguing match-up – both teams haven’t squared-off since 2012 – but it will certainly be a game to follow on Saturday. Bridgewater State won the last meeting, defeating the Gulls at home by a score of 20-14, but can Endicott even the score with a week two win? PREDICTION: Bridgewater State 27, Endicott 17

Montclair State at Salve Regina (Saturday, September 9 at 12 p.m.): This is a big test for the Seahawks, which won their season-opener by a touchdown against Worcester State. The defense will need to step-up, especially against a talented Red Hawks offense, which will provide challenges on the outside. Keep an eye on Julanee Prince and Joe Schultz in this one. PREDICTION: Montclair State 24, Salve Regina 22

Husson at Dean College   (Saturday, September 9 at 12 p.m.): This will certainly be a game to watch on Saturday as the Bulldogs make their Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) debut against the defending champion Eagles. Dean enters the season with a slew of first-year players, but Coach Steve Tirrell believes they’ll be ready to compete against some challenging foes this fall, including Husson. Dean’s biggest task in its season-opener: find a way to slow down Husson’s John SmithPREDICTION: Husson 28, Dean 21

Kean at Springfield College (Saturday, September 9 at 12 p.m.): This is Kean’s season-opener – not sure how they will do this season, but they’ll certainly provide a unique challenge for our top team in this week’s Noontime Sports Top 10 poll. Look for Springfield’s ground-and-pound game to highlight this contest. Prediction: Springfield 21, Kean 16

Cortland State at Framingham State (Saturday, September 9 at 12 p.m.): Following a big win over Endicott last weekend, the Rams will look to continue its momentum against a talented Red Dragons squad, which defeated them last season, 49-21. This is a big-time, early season test for Coach Tom Kelley‘s squad – if they pull this one out, it will be because of its defense. Nathan Fleming could be a player to watch in this game for the Rams. Prediction: Framingham State 34, Cortland State 33

Coast Guard at Union College (Saturday, September 9 at 1 p.m.): Union’s defense should provide Ethan Goldcamp and the Bears’ offense with some challenges, but perhaps the player to watch in this game will be kicker/punter Cole Austin, who recorded 10 points (two field goals,  last week in his team’s opening day win over Alfred State. PREDICTION: Coast Guard 23, Union 21

RPI at WPI (Saturday, September 9 at 1 p.m.): Earlier this week, WPI senior Dereck Pacheco told us that this particular match-up is the equivalent to Michigan-Ohio State. This game is always a must-see or must-follow because its a trophy game (Transit Trophy). PREDICTION: WPI 27, RPI 21

Endicott’s DeWall, Kalosky Appear On SportsCenter AM

By Matt Noonan (@MattNoonan11)

In case you missed it, Endicott College football made an appearance on ESPN‘s SportsCenter AM today – Sunday, September 10th – to discuss their dramatic and exciting 29-28 win over Bridgewater State.

Following a quick recap of the game-winning drive, Endicott coach Kevin DeWall and quarterback Joe Kalsoky joined the SportsCenter AM crew to discuss how the Gulls engineered an improbable comeback with less than a minute remaining.

After appearing on SportsCenter AM, Kalosky was named this week’s Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC) Offensive Player of the Week for tossing a career-best four touchdowns, including the game-winning score.

Endicott’s game-winning score also gained attention from other media outlets, including NESN, the Salem News and Saturday Down South.

The Gulls return to action next Saturday, September 16 when they visit MIT for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.

By NoontimeSports.com (@NoontimeSports)

It’s been an exciting week for the Endicott College sophomore signal-caller Joe Kalosky, who guided his team to an improbable comeback last Saturday against Bridgewater State.

Kalosky’s last second heave – a 31-yard touchdown pass to Sheilan Velazquez – helped the Gulls pick-up their initial win of the season, as well as gain some exciting traction, both on television and social media. Kalosky, along with coach Kevin DeWall, appeared on SportsCenter AM five days ago to discuss the exciting win, which had New England D3 football fans eager for more football this week.

This week, Kalsoky and the Gulls will visit MIT on Saturday, September 16th at 1 p.m. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The two teams met last season with Endicott claiming a 21-9 win, thanks to the now sophomore quarterback, who completed the game with 145 passing yards, along with a rushing touchdown in the opening session.

Noontime Sports recently caught-up with Kalosky to discuss his team’s exciting week two victory over the Bears of Bridgewater State.

It’s been a few days since your team’s exciting win over Bridgewater State, so tell me what the past few days have been like?

The weekend was an exciting time for both our school and football program. However, after our Sunday meetings, our team completely shifted our focus to MIT. We’re not dwelling on the past. We are focused on MIT.

Have you ever led a game-winning drive like you did last Saturday in high school or perhaps in the backyard with friends?

When I played for Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Connecticut, I had a similar win on Thanksgiving Day during my junior year against Wolcott High School. We received a kickoff after their go-ahead touchdown with about 40 seconds remaining – we were down by five points. We ran a few plays to get in arms distance of the end zone. We snapped the ball with less than 10 seconds left from the 41-yard line. We had a “Big Ben” play designed and ran it perfectly – technically, how it was drawn up. I threw it high and into the end zone and my receiver tapped it backwards to a trailing receiver which one-handed-it and walked into the end zone. We won 39-38.

Here is Kalosky’s game-winning touchdown pass from Thanksgiving Day 2013.

How does a win like last week help the squad going into not just this week, but the next few weeks?

I believe last week’s win helped us establish the mentality of never giving up. We played hard from the first to last snap. And its a win that will give us momentum (going forward) – is also a step forward for us in becoming the team we want to be, too.

Heading into this week’s clash with MIT, what are a few things you and the offense must do to be successful?

Heading into the MIT game (this Saturday, September 16th), we need to clean-up the aspects that we can control (on both sides of the ball). We hurt ourselves offensively too much during the first two weeks, but we have talent and just need to put it all together, so all eleven guys are on the same page.

Who is your all-time favorite quarterback?

Brett Favre. Growing up, I loved to watch his competitiveness and will to win. He had a strong arm and believed he could make any throw in the game (at any time). I admired his uncharacteristic and spontaneous plays, too. He made something out of nothing and the play was never dead in his mind.

Have you always played quarterback? If not, what other positions did you play growing up?

Mostly, I have always played quarterback since I was younger, but I did play linebacker on defense.

It is a cliché question, but what do you enjoy most about the sport of football? How has it helped you be successful off the gridiron?

I enjoy the competitiveness and camaraderie of the sport. Football has helped me be successful off the field by working well and communicating with others along with always having the competitive instinct.

You are majoring in Educational Studies. Tell me why you chose this major and what you hope to do with it after graduation in 2020?

I chose this major because I want to make a difference in kids’ lives. After graduation, I would like to get a job as a teacher in either a fourth or fifth grade urban area classroom. I would like to help kids that may not have much outside of the classroom and build them up to become a successful person.

Finally, what is your all-time favorite football movie?

My all-time favorite football movie is Friday Night Lights. This movie came out when I was playing youth football and it painted a picture of what football in my life would be like. This movie prompted me to play football in high school and eventually I made the decision to continue playing football at the collegiate level.

10 Games To Watch

By NoontimeSports.com (@NoontimeSports)

It’s Friday, which means it is time to dish out 10 games to watch this week in New England and Northeast Division III football.

As always, make sure to stay connected with us on Twitter throughout the weekend, as well as our friends at In The D3FB Huddle, too.

Utica at Brockport: Who is going to slow down these Golden Eagles? Seriously, who? The Golden Eagles soared to an impressive third-straight win last week over St. John Fisher and should bump their record to 4-0 after their late afternoon tilt with Utica concludes. PICK: Brockport 30, Utica 10

Massachusetts Maritime Academy at Framingham State: Ah, the Kelley Cup, this is always a fun one. Who will prevail? Father (Tom Kelley of the Framingham State Rams) or son (Mike Kelley of the Mass. Maritime Academy Buccaneers)? We’ll find out tomorrow, but this game pits two of the MASCAC’s best tailbacks in Quron Wright (FSU) and Richie Phillips (MMA). PREDICTION: Framingham State 28, Mass. Maritime Academy 17

MIT at Catholic: MIT has found ways to win games this season in all phases (offense, defense and special teams), while the Cardinals have relied on some young talent, including second-year quarterback Alejandro Ros to secure a pair of wins thus far. Don’t expect a high-scoring contest, but perhaps a late touchdown or field to decide this one’s outcome. PREDICTION: Catholic 22, MIT 17

Amherst at Hamilton: This will be an offensive showcase as both offenses looked pretty impressive last week against Bates (Amherst) and Tufts (Hamilton). However, Amherst is the team to watch this season in the NESCAC, so look for perhaps another solid outing from quarterback Ollie Eberth, who tossed four touchdowns a week ago. PICK: Amherst 35, Hamilton 30

Tufts at Wesleyan: For the second-straight year, these two teams will square-off under the lights. It should be a fantastic game, however, this is almost a must-win for both squads that look to remain in the mix for this year’s NESCAC title. Keep an eye on Tufts’ Ryan McDonald, who was able to convert points a week ago with his arm and legs. PREDICTION: Tufts 31, Wesleyan 24

Salve Regina at Western Conn. State: The Seahawks have won some hard-fought contests this season, including a 26-20 win over Montclair State. They secured a third-straight win over Dean a week ago, but must find a way to slow down Western Connecticut quarterback Quinn Fleeting, along with wide receivers Austin Calamita and Duane Gary. Salve Regina’s defense is tied for third in the country in scoring touchdowns (two). PREDICTION: Salve Regina 35, Western Conn. 28

WPI at Springfield: This is an intriguing match-up that pits the nation’s best rushing attack (411.7 yards per game) against a defensive unit that is tied for third in scoring touchdowns (two). This has the making for a sensational NEWMAC clash and should come down to the final drive. PREDICTION: Springfield 20, WPI 17

RPI at Buffalo State: The Engineers are proving they won’t be an easy team to take down this fall in the Liberty League. And after picking-up a third-straight win last week over Western New England, RPI has appeared to have gained some serious momentum heading into this weekend’s clash with the Bengals. PREDICTION: RPI 28, Buffalo State 20

Husson at Western New England: Coming off the bye week, Gabby Price and the Husson Eagles will be ready for this NCAA Division III Tournament re-match. Look for a big game from the Eagles’ defense – they must contain WNE quarterback Anthony Service – and John Smith, who will leads the Husson rushing attack. PREDICTION: Husson 27, WNE 24

Union at Curry: The Colonels enter this non-conference clash riding an impressive three-game winning streak. Skip Bandini told us before the season that everyone needs to step-up this fall, and so far, they have, so look for that trend to continue for another week. PREDICTION: Curry 23, Union 16

Merchant Marine 56, Maine Maritime 31: Brice Moore rushed for a game-high 137 yards and four scores, while Joseph Bellomo added two touchdowns on the ground as the Mariners earned its first-ever NEWMAC win in Castine, Maine. Maine Maritime’s Corey Creeger recorded 232 yards of total offense, while recording four scores, including three on the ground.

Fitchburg State 31, Bridgewater State 29: Nelson Valerio tossed three touchdowns, Jevon Brown-Simpson rushed for 70 yards and Jovon White recorded a team-high 12 total tackles, including six solo stops as the Falcons picked-up its initial MASCAC win of the season. Bridgewater State’s Jack Lavanchy led all receivers with 166 yards on 10 receptions and two scores.

Buffalo State 33, RPI 21: Antoine Holloman‘s go-ahead touchdown with 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter provided Buffalo State with the lead, which they would not relinquish as the Bengals picked-up their third win of the season. Holloman concluded the game with 24 yards on 11 carries, while quarterback Kyle Hoppy completed 22 of 34 passes for 263 yards and one touchdown. Hoppy also rushed for 46 yards on 13 carries.

Western New England 21, Husson 14: WNE’s Josh Henry hauled in the go-ahead touchdown – a 28-yard reception – with 52 seconds remaining as the Golden Bears squeaked past the Eagles in Springfield. John Smith (Husson) led all rushers with 128 yards on 32 carries.

Hobart 34, Endicott 17: Shane Sweeney completed 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards and tossed four touchdowns, including a 41-yard strike to Ray Conley with 2:22 remaining in the fourth quarter to send the Statesmen past the Gulls for their third win of the season. Will Genaway led Endicott’s receiving core with five catches for 74 yards and one touchdown.

Hartwick 24, St. John Fisher 21: Brian McGovern’s 21-yard field goal with three seconds remaining helped the Hawks secure their initial Empire 8 victory of the season. Billy Pine tossed three touchdowns in the win, while completing 26 of 41 passes for 375 yards. James Chambers (St. John Fisher) led all rushers with 173 yards on 18 carries and two scores.

10 Games To Watch

By NoontimeSports.com (@NoontimeSports)

Ah, it’s Friday, which means it’s time to dish out some weekly picks! It also means a brand new weekend of college football (and high school and professional) is upon us, too.

Any who, here are 10 Games to Watch this week in New England and Northeast D3 Football, as always, make sure to stay connected on Facebook and Twitter throughout the weekend for news, scores and updates!

Brockport at Cortland: The Golden Eagles have soared to four-straight wins this season, including an impressive 38-7 win over St. John Fisher two weeks ago. Their momentum should certainly continue this week against the Red Dragons. PREDICTION: Brockport 28, Cortland 21

Buffalo State at Alfred: This is a big-time test for the Bengals, who are a perfect 1-0 in Empire 8 play this season. Buffalo State scored an impressive win last week, tallying 24 unanswered points over the final two frames to beat RPI. They certainly will need to play their best against a quality Saxons foe, which has yielded at least two touchdowns per game this season. PREDICTION: Alfred 30, Buffalo State 21

MIT at Merchant Marine: If the Engineers are going to secure another NEWMAC win, their offense will need to match the Mariners’, who have scored 31 points or more in three games this season. Slowing down Brice Moore won’t be an easy task, but this Engineers defense should be up for the challenge. PREDICTION: Merchant Marine 38, MIT 26

Husson at Endicott: Endicott clearly gave Hobart a challenge last week, but can that momentum continue this week, especially against a talented Husson squad that is coming off a disappointing setback to Western New England one week ago? If Endicott is going to win this one, they must find a way to slow down John SmithPREDICTION: Husson 21, Endicott 17

Williams at Trinity: A pair of 2-0 squads are set to meet in Hartford on Saturday in what should be an interesting NESCAC affair. Trinity’s offense has put up a lot of points in its first two contests, so the Ephs must find a way to slow down their passing and rushing attacks. Keep an eye on Williams quarterback Bobby Maimaron and wide receiver Justin Nelson in this one. PREDICTION: Trinity 30, Williams 20

Alfred State at SUNY Maritime: Conference play officially begins for the ECFC and this could be an interesting contest to follow, especially since Alfred State did provide a challenge to Rochester a few weeks ago. The Privateers were off last week, but have scored some important wins this season, including a 38-31 win over Merchant Marine. PREDICTION: SUNY Maritime 28, Alfred State 14

St. Lawrence at Western New England: The Golden Bears returned to the win column last week by defeating the Eagles of Husson, thanks to 21 unanswered points over the final two frames. This week, they must continue that second half momentum against a talented St. Lawrence unit, which provided challenges to Ithaca College two weeks ago. PREDICTION: St. Lawrence 28, Western New England 20

Hobart at Ithaca: The Bombers were off last week, but return to action this week against a solid Hobart squad that relied on its passing game to defeat Endicott. Ithaca must find a way to slow down Shane Sweeney, who ranks second in the Liberty League in touchdown passes (eight). PREDICTION: Hobart 24, Ithaca 21

Union at Morrisville State: Since falling to Husson, these Dutchmen have found ways to grind out wins, including last week when they squeaked out an exciting third-straight victory over Curry College. This week, they must rely on all units – offense, defense and special teams – to defeat Morrisville State. PREDICTION: Morrisville State 30, Union 20

Hartwick at Utica: Can the Pioneers win their initial Empire 8 contest of the season? If they do, it will entail finding a way to slow down an impressive Hartwick passing attack. PREDICTION: Hartwick 31, Utica 22

For the second-straight week, the Springfield College Pride secured the top spot in this week’s Grinold Chapter New England Division III football weekly rankings.

The news of this week’s poll was announced earlier this afternoon.

The Pride, who improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, secured 10 first-place votes, while Framingham State, which checked-in second on this week’s poll, earned five first-place votes. The Rams were idle this past weekend weekend, but entered their bye week winners of four-straight.

Trinity College, Amherst College and Middlebury College rounded out the top five – the Mammoths of Amherst secured one first-place vote. All three teams head into the fourth week of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play undefeated.

Salve Regina and Curry College checked-in sixth and seventh, respectively, while MIT, Plymouth State and Husson University secured the final positions.

Springfield’s ground game highlighted their 42-3 win over Norwich this past weekend as both Jordan Wilcox (111 yards) and Chad Shade (101 yards) each found the end zone, while the defense registered five sacks. This week, the Pride head to Coast Guard Academy for a 1:30 p.m. kick-off.

Trinity secured its third-straight win of the season by defeating Williams College, 17-9. Quarterback Sonny Puzzo and tailback Max Chipouras combined for two scores, while the Bantams’ defense recorded a pair of sacks and interceptions.

Ollie Eberth highlighted Amherst’s third win of the season as the second-year signal-caller recorded a pair of scores, including a 23-yard score on the ground in the final session to secure a 31-14 win over Bowdoin College. Quarterback Jared Lebowitz completed 28 of 52 passes for 389 yards, while tossing three touchdowns in Middlebury’s 37-6 win over Colby College.

Ah, it’s Friday, which means a brand new weekend of New England and New York D3 Football is on the horizon – wahoo!

Let’s dish out this week’s (week nine) 10 Games to Watch in D3 Football (New England an New York) – as always, make sure to stay connected with us on social media throughout the weekend for news, notes and scores.

Also, make sure to follow our friends at In The (D3FB) Huddle, too!

Fitchburg State at Western Connecticut (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 12 p.m.): As of this week, Quinn Fleeting and the Colonials are in the driver seat for the MASCAC crown. However, they certainly should not overlook this Falcons squad, which beat them last season, 17-14PREDICTION: West Conn. 27, Fitchburg State 17

WPI at MIT (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 12 p.m.): This is a big one for both teams, which will look to keep the pressure on Springfield – the Pride currently remain atop the NEWMAC with an impressive 8-0 record. A win for the Engineers of WPI would keep their regular season title hopes alive, while a victory for the Engineers of MIT could set-up a potential de-facto championship game in two weeks. PREDICTION: WPI 28, MIT 25

Framingham State at UMass Dartmouth (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 12 p.m.): Last season, the Corsairs defeated the Rams, but can they do its again this season? We’ll see – the Rams need a win to keep their conference championship hopes alive! PREDICTION: Framingham State 28, UMass Dartmouth 21

Becker at Nichols (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 12 p.m.): We have a unique Worcester rivalry in the making here, especially after a hard-fought win by the Bison last fall (16-13). Can the Bison make it back-to-back seasons with a win over the Hawks or will Becker soar past Nichols in this meeting? PREDICTION: Nichols 30, Becker 20

Trinity at Middlebury (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 1 p.m.): Can the Bantams’ momentum continue this weekend against a solid Panther squad that has rebounded from a last-second setback to Williams College? We’ll find out – the Panthers must find a way to slow down the Bantams’ rushing attack, specifically Max Chipouras, who has rushed for nine touchdowns this season. PREDICTION: Trinity 27, Middlebury 24

Salve Regina at Western New England (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 1 p.m.): The Golden Bears appear to have found their groove, but can they continue their current momentum against a Seahawks squad that appears eager to snatch the inaugural Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC) crown. PREDICTION: Salve Regina 26, Western New England 21

Ithaca at Utica (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 1 p.m.):  A convincing 34-12 win over Buffalo State last week has us thinking this Pioneers squad will provide some serious challenges for these Bombers. PREDICTION: Utica 30, Ithaca 25

Brockport at Buffalo State (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 1 p.m.): Defense wins championships, and as of now, the Golden Eagles’ defense is legit. This will be a tough test for the Bengals’ offense! PREDICTION: Brockport 34, Buffalo State 14

Amherst at Tufts (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 1:30 p.m.):
Despite a loss to Middlebury, these Mammoths still remain in the hunt for a NESCAC crown. And to remain in the hunt, they’ll need to defeat a Tufts squad, which is flying high after an exciting win a week ago in Williamstown.  PREDICTION: Tufts 21, Amherst 20

SUNY Cortland at St. John Fisher (Saturday, Oct. 28th at 2 p.m.): Since falling to Brockport last month, these Red Dragons have been on a roll, winning three consecutive contests. Can they keep this momentum going, especially against a St. John Fisher? PREDICTION: Cortland 27, St. John Fisher 15

NS BBALL Roundup

By NoontimeSports.com (@NoontimeSports)

Saturday was a crazy day in New England D3 Hoops with upsets, new records and yes, even a coach earning 100 wins – congrats Coach Santa Fe!

Here are the highlights from what was an exciting and busy day of D3 Hoops!

Let’s congratulate (once again) Coach Angela Santa Fe on reaching 100 wins as the Regis College  women’s basketball team defeated Suffolk University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

Johnny McCarthy and the Amherst College men’s basketball team cruised to an impressive win over Hamilton College this afternoon. The win – the Mammoths’ 10th of the season and second in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play – halted the Continentals’ 15-game winning streak, which dates back to last November!

The Amherst College women’s basketball team established a new program for consecutive wins – 51, to be exact – as they also defeated Hamilton this afternoon, too.

Nick Gilpin recorded a layup with 13 seconds remaining, which helped Bates College stun Tufts University, 77-75. The win snapped a three-game losing streak, too.

Abby Kelly scored a team-high 17 points as the Bowdoin College women’s basketball team cruised to a 74-33 win over Colby College to improve to 17-0 overall.

David Reynolds netted a career-high 29 points to lead the Bowdoin men’s basketball team past Colby, 83-77. The Polar Bears led the Mules, 46-33 at the break, but relied on its defense to secure the win as Colby outscored the hosts, 44-37, in the second half.

MIT erased a five-point deficit at the break to defeat Babson College in overtime by a score of 80-78. Bradley Jomard (MIT) recorded a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds in the win – he almost recorded a triple-double, but finished with eight assists.

The UMass Dartmouth women’s basketball team netted 31 points in the third quarter en route to defeating Plymouth State, 78-64.

The UMass Boston women’s basketball team rebounded from a mid-week setback to defeat Keene State this afternoon to secure a season sweep for the second time in program history.

Thanks to 15 points from Alex Goslin, the Springfield College women’s basketball team was able to defeat Babson College for an important New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory.

The WPI men’s basketball team collaborated for 13 trifectas this afternoon to defeat Clark University.

A 28 point third quarter helped the Castleton University women’s basketball team defeat Thomas to improve to 10-0 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play.

Despite a 58-49 setback to Gordon College, Curry College’s Emily Irwin recorded her 1,000th point, while pacing the Colonels with a game-high 20 points.

Olivia Bolden became the third member of the Albertus Magnus women’s basketball program to reach 1,000 points.

Sam Maglione netted six triples and tallied 26 points as Worcester State women’s basketball top Fitchburg State to even its record at 8-8.

A second half surge helped Nichols College men’s basketball rally to defeat Roger Williams (82-79) and extend its current winning streak to five-games.
